First, Gillam cites an American survey published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine which documents the physical side-effects of long working hours. These include an increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, fatigue, stress, depression, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic infections, diabetes and other general health complaints
Second, the article also notes that this long-hours culture is bad for businesses because of (among other things) lower productivity levels and the potential for accidents which occur when burnt out workers experience lapses in concentration.
