The agreement, reached with the help of mediator Kevin Burkett, eliminates the existing Voluntary Early Academic Retirement Program as of Dec. 31, 2005, while making amendments to the pension plan for early retirements on or after June 30, 2006, and establishes a new phased retirement program effective July 1, 2006. Special transitional options will be offered to those whose normal retirement date is June 30, 2005.
The agreement must still go before the University's Governing Council for approval and to the UTFA council for ratification. Meanwhile, legislative changes are expected this spring, following the conclusion in September 2004 of the consultations on mandatory retirement by the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
